Finally, I finish up this entry as Wednesday’s radio show wrapped with the conclusion to the Young Galaxy interview and final original interview at venues with Born Ruffians.
The playlist what I played is at this link.
This is it for the Summer as I won’t be writing too much entries but expect a few Specials on the blog. The radio show will continue on with specials and re-airings.
Without further ado, here’s the audio links to listen.

This ends Season 1 for the radio show and Season 5 (full) on the blog.

Part 1 (June 23, 2010)
This is the first of 2 parts to the end of season or series 5 of my blog & my radio show. The radio show will continue during the Summer as I will still be on the air and airing past interviews. It’s more like “the best of.” Expect no new materials for all of Summer but there’s a possibility of a few themed specials. The blog itself will be on a Summer break, just like the TV shows which ended in May.
The June 23rd show was considered the 2nd last show before the Summer break as I needed to air a couple of new interviews. Joining me on the radio show was a CBC Radio 3 fan/listener, Johanna Innes. She’s from Ottawa but studying at South Carolina. It was a blast having her on because she’s so interested in Canadian music and really enjoy being on the radio. Another reason for her to be on was that she recently attended NXNE in Toronto over the weekend and also talked about The Polaris Music Prize Long List. We discussed the positives and negatives as who were on the list and who wasn’t on the list. It was a shock that Said The Whale weren’t on the list. I had to play False Creek Change as a sort of protest in a tongue and cheek manner.
I was happy to hear that You Say Party (formerly You Say Party! We Say Die!) will be continuing after the death of drummer of Devon Clifford. Although, they lost another founding member but added two new members. It’s great that they will be continuing on.
Also on the show were two interviews being aired. The first was Vancouver’s fanshaw and the other was The Besnard Lakes. I had an extra half hour and aired the first part of the Young Galaxy interview.
Here’s the playlist for what was played on the show. Click here to check it out. The Wild 5 Countdown is on link list (right side if you can find it).

Last thing, I did not experience the earthquake as I was on the bus. I missed out on the fun and fear. If you’re interested, you can listen to CHUO’s Now Playing at this link. I was listening on the bus and the fire alarm almost gave me a hearing loss.

Without further ado, you can listen to the radio show by pressing play here. To make it simple, I also have hours 1 & 2 for separate listening if you don’t want to listen for all of 2 hours.

So long until the Fall!

It’s Basically The Whole Month of May Entry – S05.2E08

Updated on May 26, 2010
Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to chat with Leif Vollebekk at the 1st May Whee Festival at Zaphod Beeblebrox.
Wednesday’s radio show will be fully updated later but for now, the Leif Vollebekk audio interview is posted up. You should enjoy the interview as it became a hilarious interview. I even made some goof-ups on the interview. I apologize for messing up on the question about The Balconies. He didn’t form the band, he helped gave Jacquie, Stephen and Liam the name.
Also on the radio show was an expanded edition of the countdown. For this week only, my Wild 5 Countdown became the W10 Countdown.

The W10 Countdown for Week of May 5, 2010.
1. Fixed – Stars
2. Forced to Love – Broken Social Scene (new entry)

Dan Mangan Concert Plus Interview & Sad Love Songs in Chinese – S05.2E06

Dan Mangan was amazing at Mavericks on April 24, 2010. Opening up for Dan was the Australian indie pop duo, An Horse. Ottawa was the final concert of his tour. The concert didn’t disappoint as it was sold out and it was also the night when the Ottawa Senators got ousted by The Pittsburgh Penguins. What made the show interesting were ladies screaming for Mangan and the crowd literally sang along to songs like Sold, Road Regrets and etc. This leads me to the photo above and then Wednesday’s radio show. As I mentioned on-air and as you see the photo that I had a chance to join on stage for the song, Robots, with Mangan and diehard fans. It was a nice opportunity to interview Mangan because I haven’t seen him since 2008 when he first performed at The Mercury Lounge. Nice, Nice, Very Nice was released last year and he performed at The Black Sheep Inn and at Algonquin College. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to see him.

What I played on Wednesday’s show were another audio interview with Pawnshop Diamond.
For the second hour (called WildWorks Extra), there were sad love songs in Chinese being played. Even though it’s the last day to host solo for 2 hours on the radio. I wasn’t sure what kind of Cantopop/Mandopop songs for the final week and decided to go for sad love songs. The final two songs I played were linked towards the Qinghai Earthquake which hit April 14th. The first song played is a new song and the last song is a classic as both symbolize hope.

Before I post the link for the playlist, here’s the Wild 5 Countdown. You Say Party! We Say Die! is #1 for the 2nd week.

The Wild 5 Countdown for the week of April 28th, 2010

1. Laura Palmer’s Prom – You Say Party! We Say Die!
2. Fixed – Stars
3. The Right Time (feat. Tyler Bancroft) – Hannah Georgas
4. Lulu – The Balconies
5. Shoulders & Turns – The Belle Game

Don’t forget to check the playlist by going to this link.

The audio archive is somewhat back on but there’s a slight issue with the host break segments and some of the songs being played. You may have to adjust the volume for parts of the host break segments.

The Language-Arts Interview and Another Mishap – S05.2E05

Wednesday’s radio show had an airing the lovely band from Vancouver, BC, Language-Arts. The interview was recorded back in March and here’s a video that I helped filmed for Bands Undone at Canteen Art Shop + Gallery.

Since it’s another week that retrieving the audio for my radio show has been difficult due to issues surrounding the software. In short summary if you missed it, after the Language-Arts interview, I played Coughdrop and mentioned that I had been sick for a week and took some coughdrops. Let’s say that I briefly sang, “Ricola.”

The recap of the Wild 5 Countdown has 2 new entries and 3 songs slipping down a notch.
The Wild 5 Countdown for April 21, 2010
5. Search for Sarah Jane – Hawksley Workman
4. Fake It – Plants and Animals
3. Fixed – Stars
2. Odessa – Caribou
1. Laura Palmer’s Prom – You Say Party! We Say Die!
The reason for choosing Laura Palmer’s Prom was because of drummer, Devon Clifford, who passed away on Sunday, April 18, 2010. It’s been sad for Canadian music fans and the Canadian music industry because it was a sudden shock. As previously written on the last post, it was a privilege to see the band back on April 3, during the Easter holiday. Devon was the last person we chatted before heading back for a long walk to the hotel. Devon, Becky, Stephen, Krista and Derek of YSP! WSD! are the nicest people I have met. Without Devon’s humourous presence during their performance, it wouldn’t be same. I’m still pleased to see them several weeks and giving them their full support.
Also on show were brief mentions for Ottawa Bluesfest’s lineup (only played Metric and Basia Bulat), played 3 versions of Wavin’ Flag by K’Naan (one was a Chinese version) and Sandy Lam songs (her birthday is on April 26th)

Here is the show for April 21st, but the audio quality is not the best. You can check the playlist at this link. There’s a possibly of replaying some songs again in a few weeks when the host returns from his vacation in England and Europe.

Delays Due To Being Sick and Malfunctions – S05.2E04

Sorry for not posting a new entry for this week because I got sick with the cold and sore throat as I didn’t have the energy to write. The second reason is that I don’t have the April 14th edition of the radio show because of a software issue at the station I do have the show but it’s on a different audio format.
I also debuted a new addition to the show, I got a top 5 countdown called The Wild 5 or W5 Countdown. Here’s the debut list.
W5 Countdown – April 14, 2010
5. Red Door – Tall Trees
4. Kettering – The Antlers
3. Fake It – Plants & Animals
2. Fixed – Stars
1. Odessa – Caribou

The playlist from the radio show is at this link.
Here are the interviews that were aired on the April 14th radio show. Even though the interviews were recorded back in February, it was considered unique timing because Young Rival’s full length album was released and Bahamas returned to Ottawa for a concert with Zeus and Jason Collett.

Easter Weekend Fun in Montreal with You Say Party! We Say Die! & Part of The Belle Game – S05.2E03

You Say Party! We Say Die! in Montreal
Back from Montreal, QC over the Easter holiday. It was a spur of the moment because You Say Party! We Say Die! was in Montreal for a show there and they skipped Ottawa and a few other Ontario cities. It was nice to go outside of Ottawa for a concert. It’s been a very long time I went to a concert in Montreal and that was back in 1993 for Duran Duran at the once famous and legendary Montreal Forum. The slight irony with these two different bands that they are in the New Wave music genre.
Back to YSP! WSD! in Montreal, they were performing at La Sala Rossa. As previously mentioned, it’s the first time to check out an indie music venue in Montreal and my lack of knowledge of the Montreal music scene and venues are minimal at best. Prior to their performance, I arrived to the venue a bit early because I am not familiar with area of Montreal and I saw some of the members and they remembered me.
Overall, their performance was energetic and lot of dancing around. It was great to remember half of the songs because I always kept playing songs from XXXX on my radio show. The crazy part came almost near the end of the set when Like I Give a Care was played and then the opening acts (Braids and Makeout Videotape) came out on stage and delivered the mosh pit/crowd surfing. Lead vocalist, Becky Ninkovic joined in the fray towards the crowd. The other crazy part was her back or leg landed on me as she was getting back on stage from the moshing.
The photo on top was when the band performed on Like I Give A Care.

The V-Day Edition Radio Show – S05E36

Wednesday morning’s show was just playing music as I did not want to air an interview because Valentine’s Day is around the corner. Played some love songs from Canadian indie musicians and bands. From the likes of Basia Bulat (who will be in Ottawa for a show on Saturday night), You Say Party! We Say Die! (they released XXXX in the States on Feb. 9), Stars and a rarity for myself to play Justin Rutledge. Just to name a few on the love songs.
One song I played was in an episode of Chuck, Season 1 and played Truly Madly Deeply by Savage Garden. Yes, that is no joke! The last hour had me playing Cantopop love songs.
Almost forgot to mention that Chinese New Year is on the same day as Valentine’s Day. I foolishly forgot to say on-air that it’s the year of. It’s the Year of the Tiger. I will remind myself for next Wednesday morning.
Without further ado, you can check the playlist at this link.
I did two dedications to a friend and you want to know where to find it, fast forward to 1 hr and 39 mins.

You can listen to the show by pressing play.

Apologies for sound quality as the on-air studio had a change in computers. It’s difficult to not know the settings for Adobe Audition. Sometimes the audio quality will vary week in, week out. It’s not under my control.

Matthew de Zoete & Finally Aired The Hey Ocean! Interview – S05E34

Matthew de Zoete at Bands Undone

On a nice Wednesday afternoon, Matthew de Zoete dropped by at The Canteen Art Shop + Gallery for a intimidate set for Bands Undone. His music based on his MySpace page blends Pop, Rock and Folk. The Hamilton musician was in Ottawa for a performance at The National Arts Centre. He kindly came to the gallery and performed four songs. The last song was unique and experimental because of the lighting. Overall, he’s a great guy prior to and after the session. The interview with Kara was a hoot because of the sunglasses.
Videos and Review from Bands Undone are at this link.

Wednesday’s 2 Hour Radio Show

I finally aired the Hey Ocean! interview on a special 2 hour show because the 2 other program hosts at CKCU-FM were away and I had the opportunity to air the long interview into two parts. In my slight opinion, I didn’t do a good job on the host breaks because of the distraction in the on-air studio. Due to the fact that the station was installing the Media Touch system. What I wanted to say on-air was somewhat goofed up.
It’s too bad the other host I join with at 10am wasn’t there because I had planned to chat more on Jackie Chan films. Unfortunately, I will try again next week as this other radio show on CKCU called The Drunken Master Review, talks about movies and Hong Kong films in general. I might have a little rivalry of sorts, in a joking manner.
You can check the playlist at this link. New songs from the likes of Basia Bulat, Kate Maki (from her Two Song Wedding album), Caribou and local favorites from Sadie Hell and The Balconies were played. Played several bands and musicians that will be performing during the Olympics. I am still not sick of You Say Party! We Say Die! yet. Even Strombo still plays them on his Sunday night radio show on CBC Radio 2. Even though, I didn’t play Glory, they just released the music video for it. It’s over at Vimeo. Check it out, it’s the same setting as Dark Days.
Ended the show with one song from Help for Haiti Now and a classic song with a newly updated version, soon to be released.

Feb. 23, 2010 Semi-Update: Talk about irony but CBC Radio 3‘s R3TV released a new episode on Hey Ocean! I sort of beat them to the punch on asking Ashleigh Ball on her other job. It’s voice acting for cartoons. Here’s the link to check it out, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eY0n8i9oQKw Mind you that my audio interview was conducted back in November 2009.

The Wooden Sky Interview and The Radio Show – S05E33

On Sunday January 24, I had the opportunity to check out The Wooden Sky at Bands Undone and did a very silly interview with three of the members. The band was in Ottawa for the Ottawa Folk Festival’s Acoustic Wave series. I did not take any photos for this session as I other things on mind during the weekend. Their set was great as they did performed four songs. Great band and they’re embarking on their tour at this moment.
Video performance is up on Vimeo at this link.
Review including videos from Bands Undone is at this link.

The Radio Show for January 27, 2010

As promised, I played some new Canadian indie tunes and a new segment (including Audio Sensory Resuscitation) counting down the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
I decided to air The Wooden Sky interview this week because of one question as I did not want to make this particular song old if it’s aired at a later month. The interviews from November and December will be aired soon. Prior to airing the interview, I had to rant about another CKCU show because they talked about Hong Kong movies. That show was The Drunken Master Review. It was sort of ranting what I thought about Jackie Chan’s New Police Story.
It was unexpected to get an extra half hour because the incoming host was busy with something.
Here’s the playlist for Audio Sensory Resuscitation – link
Here’s the playlist for my show – link.

Another option is listening to my show if you want to know about my rant on Jackie Chan, The Drunken Master Review and the songs I played.

The Most Serene Republic Interview Added With a Snowstorm – S05E28

What a way to start Wednesday morning with a blast of snow. Even though my blog is snowing (until January 4, 2010), it’s not as intense and cold compared to outside in Ottawa. I was able to make it to CKCU through blizzard conditions. The bus ride took me over an hour. Yep, Winter has arrived. During the show, I had to endure Lady GaGa by surprise, thanks to the host. Go ahead as you laugh it off. Today’s show included some several Christmas tunes and the interview with one of the members of The Most Serene Republic.
I still can’t stop playing You Say Party! We Say Die! Enjoy listening to the show.
Can’t wait to check out Bands Undone for Friday as it will be Mother Mother and Laurent Bourque at different times.
Here’s Wednesday edition of Audio Sensory Resuscitation and my show combine. Press play to listen.

Here’s my show. Press play to listen.

Due to the sound quality from the radio show being not so great, you can listen to the interview with Emma of The Most Serene Republic separately. Press play to listen or download it.
