A Dreary, Gloomy and Rainy Monday – S05E06

On-Air Studio Control Board
It was totally unexpected but I got to fill in on-air again. It’s funny how I was on-air for Friday, the end of the week and now hosting at the beginning of the new week. I was hoping to be co-hosting with Kristal on her show and weigh in my thoughts on F**ked Up winning the Polaris Music Prize for their album, The Chemistry of Common Life.
On the show, I got to mention in short detail that I will be going to Basia Bulat at The Black Sheep Inn on October 3, 2009. I’m trying to not write as much but listen to the show for anyone who missed it, as you will be surprised with the songs I played and as usual, the playlist is posted up.

Here’s the player for anyone who missed it live or want to listen again. Press play to listen.

My Weekend Warm-Up – S05E05

Kyrie Krismanson at The Black Sheep Inn on Sept. 26, 2009
It was an exciting Saturday night at The Black Sheep Inn as it was Kyrie Kristmanson headlining with guests, Jill Zmud and Adam Saikaley. I was with a few friends and my brother. It’s nice to have good company and talk about funny stories. To the performances, it was a surprise to see CBC Radio One’s AlanAquamanNeal be the MC for the concert. Adam Saikaley, who’s still a producer with the CBC started off by playing with the piano. It was raw and very different from the previous music I’ve seen and heard. Certainly, a nice way to start off his set. The second performer, Jill Zmud, who is an up and comer to the Ottawa music scene. She’s originally from Saskatchewan and now living in Ottawa. She brought a softer tone to her set. Her songs were sultry and calming, which felt engaging to the audience. She had a funny story about her previous guitar being broken thanks to United Airlines and mentioned about Dave Carroll and the broken guitar song.

Onto Kyrie, before she got on stage to perform, Alan Neal was still on stage and I told my brother about him wearing the Aquaman shirt. Alan heard me as it was somewhat of a funny moment because whenever I see Alan, he usually wears a DC Comics… or Entertainment heroes shirt. As for Kyrie and her trademark white furry hat, she delivered an excellent set where she performed her usually songs and addition to some new material. I was surprised with a few French songs she played. As usual, she got the audience to join along with the songs. Overall, great crowd to keep the performers excited on a Saturday.

Here’s a clip I took.

I have put some videos from the Chinese songs I played on the bottom of the post. I still cherish the early 1990s Cantopop songs.

Friday’s Entry
: It was very last minute being notified but I filled in on the Weekend Warm-Up at CKCU 93.1 FM. This entry will be continuous because I will be covering my post for the concert happening at The Black Sheep Inn for Saturday night. Here’s the first part of the entry for the radio show I filled in.

Anyone can listen to it if they missed out on it live. Note: You may have to lower the volume during Night Lights by Videotape and after. Apologies on the sound issues coming from my laptop. Press Play to listen.

August Extra #2 – Horses Spilled Milk and Guest Hosting for Kristal’s Method

View From The Tay River in Perth, Ontario
I know the photo is not really linked to this particular entry but I mentioned at the start of Horses Spilled Milk that I went to Perth, Ontario on Saturday for 2 lion dance performances. Check the 2009 Summer page for the short entry. I had to sub in for co-host for the beginning of the show because he was running late. I was basically a lifesaver for Horses Spilled Milk and Kristal’s Method.
Halfway through Horses Spilled Milk, there was a classic 80s song played and the hint; The Breakfast Club, directed by the late John Hughes.

Afterwards, I unexpectedly decided to guest host Kristal’s Method because Kristal wasn’t around. I had to scramble and figure out what songs to play. I had help from Armen of Thematics at CKCU-FM at the first host break. This time, I totally played 100% Canadian independent music.
Note: Audio for both shows are no longer available to listen.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Bluesfest and Filling-In On Air at CKCU-FM [Summer Entry]

Note: Off-season blog entry.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Ottawa Bluesfest
The day after Ottawa Bluesfest, I had the opportunity to fill in on-air at CKCU-FM from 5-6pm. I somewhat stumbled speaking on-air and hopefully it wasn’t a problem. I called it the WildWorks Show and I failed to mention my support of Canadian indie music. I know I played two non-Canadian tracks but I just love Zero by Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Here’s the player to listen for anyone who missed it:

Basia Bulat at The Black Sheep Inn – S04E10

With Basia Bulat at The Black Sheep Inn on January 23, 2009

This is the first entry for 2009, apologies for the lack of updates on the blog at the beginning of January. Thanks to the ongoing bus strike, I have not been able to go a lot concerts. So far, the first concert of 2009 to attend was Basia Bulat at The Black Sheep Inn. It was the fourth time to see her live. The opening act for Basia was Leif Vollebekk. I was surprised to see a very packed crowd as Basia has become popular and a darling in the Canadian indie music scene. It was an awesome performance from the lovely and talented Basia Bulat. The audience were very supportive as they clapped and cheered along to her songs. I even joined along the clapping for some of her songs like “I Was a Daughter”. A very cute moment when the Black Sheep Inn owner’s dog barked at one of Basia’s song and she had to start over. Overall, the Ottawa crowd loves her and she appreciates the support she gets when coming to Ottawa and The Black Sheep Inn.
There you will see the photo of myself and Basia after the concert. The funny thing was part of the entry was written at The Black Sheep Inn using the iPod touch. In a way, I wrote a bit at the venue.

Due to the delay in blogging to start 2009, I didn’t get to write Happy New Year due to the gloomy bus strike . I forgot to mention that I still miss Amanda Putz on CBC Radio 3. I am saddened that there is no more Ottawa representation for CBC Radio 3. I really enjoy hearing Amanda Putz since her return to Hong Kong back in September 2007. Without her voice, I would not be able to listen to a lot of Canadian indie music and bump into her at concerts. Her final web radio show was on December 31, 2008. I have not written an email to feedback at Radio 3 because I am somewhat stumped on what to write in wanting to bring back Amanda on air again.

Basia Bulat in Ottawa Again – S3E14

On Thursday night, I went to the Basia Bulat concert at Zaphod Beeblebrox. I was glad that Basia still remembers my brother and myself. Although, the funny thing was that she forgot my name. Another funny moment as we were checking Basia and her band on sound check, I was standing near my brother and Maggie, out of nowhere comes Amanda Putz appearing as I made a funny surprise gesture that startled me.
All in all, the concert with Katie Stelmanis and Amos The Transparent were excellent. I didn’t expect to see a lot of people to see Basia Bulat which meant a big turnout. I am guessing Basia is becoming a word of mouth.
