Upon arriving to Vancouver, the first thing on my mind to go to was the Chinese Canadian Museum. It’s located in Vancouver Chinatown.
There’s this exhibition that got me interested at the museum and it’s called Dream Factory: Cantopop Mandopop 1980s-2000.
The exhibition delves through the connection between Hong Kong’s Cantopop music and Canada. It also celebrates the golden age of Cantopop and Mandopop music.
Entering the exhibition was filled with joy and nostalgia. Hearing the classic songs from the 1980s to the 1990s was just pure excitement and happiness.
On display at the museum were recreated dresses and clothing from singers Sally Yeh, Aaron Kwok to the legendary late singers, Leslie Cheung, Anita Mai and Teresa Teng. “Fashion Meets Music” showcases six Canadian fashion designers and how elegantly they recreated those outfits.
There’s an LED wall sound display and vinyl albums posted to the walls in the exhibit. There was suppose to be a karaoke stage where you can sing the classics.
There’s a short film documenting the life of Leslie Cheung when he lived in Vancouver.
Even though the exhibition seemed short, it was a lot to take in with good information with how it’s connected to Canada.
The exhibition was suppose to be done on May 31, 2026, it has been extended until August 23, 2026.
If you’re planning to go to Vancouver and are a Cantopop and Mandopop fan, it is worth checking out and will take you a trip down memory lane.
