May Sweeps and Chinatown Remixed – S06E36

Weekend Fun – Radio Show & May Sweeps (TV Shows)
It was an awesome weekend as it started off with The New Midnight Jamz on CKCU-FM. There were some guests and it became fun hanging around. There were models and then the other guest was a DJ and friends. Considering that it’s the final May to be on the show as the remaining weekends of May will have me absent. As for the models from Saturday’s show, they will be back again for my show for Wednesday morning.

Onto May sweeps, it’s this time of year when the TV season is finishing up. From the special podcast with Daddy Rich of The New Midnight Jamz, we talked about show which ended on Friday. It was Smallville as it wrapped ten seasons on TV. It’s astounding that it lasted ten years. The first song to start off was “Save Me” by Remo Zero. It’s going to be sad missing the song. Another show being discussed on the special podcast is Chuck as it wraps up its fourth season and great but sad news for the show is that it will be back for a fifth and final season with only 13 episodes. Also on the podcast were songs that were played on Chuck as some of the songs were from Canadian indie bands. Played were Stars, In-Flight Safety and Plants & Animals. Lastly, how can you not forget about Doctor Who as the current sixth series has been good.

You can listen to the special podcast and the May 14th edition of The New Midnight Jamz in the audio section. I will try to post up a playlist from the special podcast. Hope you will enjoy the podcast.

Chinatown Remixed 2011
This leads me to the other event on Sunday. It was Chinatown Remixed in Ottawa’s Chinatown on Somerset Street, I was there to support May-Jun as she had her art photograph displayed at one of the venues and do a live performance. After her performance, I decided to tag along and check out the other art and photo displays at various places on Ottawa Chinatown. It was all in great fun on a nice Sunday afternoon. Luckily, the rain held off for the rest of Sunday afternoon.
The photos are posted below. Enjoy!

It’s Basically The Whole Month of May Entry – S05.2E08

Updated on May 26, 2010
Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to chat with Leif Vollebekk at the 1st May Whee Festival at Zaphod Beeblebrox.
Wednesday’s radio show will be fully updated later but for now, the Leif Vollebekk audio interview is posted up. You should enjoy the interview as it became a hilarious interview. I even made some goof-ups on the interview. I apologize for messing up on the question about The Balconies. He didn’t form the band, he helped gave Jacquie, Stephen and Liam the name.
Also on the radio show was an expanded edition of the countdown. For this week only, my Wild 5 Countdown became the W10 Countdown.

The W10 Countdown for Week of May 5, 2010.
1. Fixed – Stars
2. Forced to Love – Broken Social Scene (new entry)

Easter Weekend Fun in Montreal with You Say Party! We Say Die! & Part of The Belle Game – S05.2E03

You Say Party! We Say Die! in Montreal
Back from Montreal, QC over the Easter holiday. It was a spur of the moment because You Say Party! We Say Die! was in Montreal for a show there and they skipped Ottawa and a few other Ontario cities. It was nice to go outside of Ottawa for a concert. It’s been a very long time I went to a concert in Montreal and that was back in 1993 for Duran Duran at the once famous and legendary Montreal Forum. The slight irony with these two different bands that they are in the New Wave music genre.
Back to YSP! WSD! in Montreal, they were performing at La Sala Rossa. As previously mentioned, it’s the first time to check out an indie music venue in Montreal and my lack of knowledge of the Montreal music scene and venues are minimal at best. Prior to their performance, I arrived to the venue a bit early because I am not familiar with area of Montreal and I saw some of the members and they remembered me.
Overall, their performance was energetic and lot of dancing around. It was great to remember half of the songs because I always kept playing songs from XXXX on my radio show. The crazy part came almost near the end of the set when Like I Give a Care was played and then the opening acts (Braids and Makeout Videotape) came out on stage and delivered the mosh pit/crowd surfing. Lead vocalist, Becky Ninkovic joined in the fray towards the crowd. The other crazy part was her back or leg landed on me as she was getting back on stage from the moshing.
The photo on top was when the band performed on Like I Give A Care.

The V-Day Edition Radio Show – S05E36

Wednesday morning’s show was just playing music as I did not want to air an interview because Valentine’s Day is around the corner. Played some love songs from Canadian indie musicians and bands. From the likes of Basia Bulat (who will be in Ottawa for a show on Saturday night), You Say Party! We Say Die! (they released XXXX in the States on Feb. 9), Stars and a rarity for myself to play Justin Rutledge. Just to name a few on the love songs.
One song I played was in an episode of Chuck, Season 1 and played Truly Madly Deeply by Savage Garden. Yes, that is no joke! The last hour had me playing Cantopop love songs.
Almost forgot to mention that Chinese New Year is on the same day as Valentine’s Day. I foolishly forgot to say on-air that it’s the year of. It’s the Year of the Tiger. I will remind myself for next Wednesday morning.
Without further ado, you can check the playlist at this link.
I did two dedications to a friend and you want to know where to find it, fast forward to 1 hr and 39 mins.

You can listen to the show by pressing play.

Apologies for sound quality as the on-air studio had a change in computers. It’s difficult to not know the settings for Adobe Audition. Sometimes the audio quality will vary week in, week out. It’s not under my control.

The Ohbijou Interview and What’s Ahead for December – S05E26

I had to fill-in for the host of Audio Sensory Resuscitation on CKCU-FM for Wednesday. Luckily, I was prepared to play whatever songs and I started off with What’s Going On?, a cover from the classic Marvin Gaye song. Done by the All Star Tribute, it was for the fight against AIDS Worldwide in 2001, following the 9/11 attacks. It was the day after World AIDS Day, which takes place on December 1. It’s fitting that I played “What’s Going On” and the new song by Alicia Keys because I’ve been a supporter of the (Red) campaign. From the Hallmark cards to the iPod nano, it’s all for a good cause. What’s unique this year was having to participate via Twitter by using red texts and watching the Alicia Keys live concert through YouTube as part of World AIDS Day.
Aside from that, I finally aired the interview with two members of Ohbijou. Mind you, there were funny moments that I didn’t edit out in the interview. My segments throughout the show was a coast to coast starting from Joel Plaskett of Halifax all the way to British Columbia from bands like Said The Whale, You Say Party! We Say Die! and etc. Then I played this connecting theme from Silver Starling to Stars and Arcade Fire. There were some shoutouts to people I called out during the B.C. set.
You can listen to Wednesday’s show by pressing play. Slight apologies on the sound because it seems like it’s back to the mono-like sound quality.

The Ohibjou interview. Press play to listen or download it.

Don’t forget to check the playlist.
I can’t wait for the return of Corey & Erica on the airwaves because their presence has been missed. They will be on sometime next week. We also need Kristal of Kristal’s Method to return on the radio too. I also can’t wait to play some Christmas tunes.

What’s happening in December? I’m starting off by participating in the YouTube Battle at Babylon Nightclub this Friday. Presented by Artengine, Canteen and Disorganized.

As usual, I will be attending Bands Undone with Caledonia, Mother Mother and Laurent Bourque.

A Dreary, Gloomy and Rainy Monday – S05E06

On-Air Studio Control Board
It was totally unexpected but I got to fill in on-air again. It’s funny how I was on-air for Friday, the end of the week and now hosting at the beginning of the new week. I was hoping to be co-hosting with Kristal on her show and weigh in my thoughts on F**ked Up winning the Polaris Music Prize for their album, The Chemistry of Common Life.
On the show, I got to mention in short detail that I will be going to Basia Bulat at The Black Sheep Inn on October 3, 2009. I’m trying to not write as much but listen to the show for anyone who missed it, as you will be surprised with the songs I played and as usual, the playlist is posted up.

Here’s the player for anyone who missed it live or want to listen again. Press play to listen.

August Extra #2 – Horses Spilled Milk and Guest Hosting for Kristal’s Method

View From The Tay River in Perth, Ontario
I know the photo is not really linked to this particular entry but I mentioned at the start of Horses Spilled Milk that I went to Perth, Ontario on Saturday for 2 lion dance performances. Check the 2009 Summer page for the short entry. I had to sub in for co-host for the beginning of the show because he was running late. I was basically a lifesaver for Horses Spilled Milk and Kristal’s Method.
Halfway through Horses Spilled Milk, there was a classic 80s song played and the hint; The Breakfast Club, directed by the late John Hughes.

Afterwards, I unexpectedly decided to guest host Kristal’s Method because Kristal wasn’t around. I had to scramble and figure out what songs to play. I had help from Armen of Thematics at CKCU-FM at the first host break. This time, I totally played 100% Canadian independent music.
Note: Audio for both shows are no longer available to listen.

Guest Hosted on Kristal’s Method at CKCU-FM and Shoes [Summer Entry]

Note: Off-season entry.

Shoe Collection for 2009
Again, I got to do another fill-in slot on-air at CKCU-FM 93.1. This time, it was for Kristal’s Method because Kristal (the host) could not make it back to Ottawa from Toronto. Plus, it was a Civic Holiday in Canada. It was the second time to host a radio show. I dunno if the one from CBC Radio 3 with Craig Norris counts because I talked through the phone and I didn’t use any equipments. I did co-host on Kristal’s Method on the day that the Polaris Music Prize unveiled their Long List. I would say that I have been on-air 4 times.
Here’s this new player to listen:

Stars Concert in Ottawa from Thursday Night – S3E17

On Thursday night (April 3, 2008), Stars came to Ottawa for a gig at The Bronson Centre. The funny thing was that my bro and I decided to wait outside of the Bronson Centre at 3pm to get the front row seats. All the wait was somewhat worth it.
Overall, it was a great concert but I thought the sound coming from the mic didn’t come out clearly. Still, the crowd was awesome and loud for Stars. Pictured above are Evan Cranley and Torquil Campbell. It was nice to wait outside at the back of the Bronson Centre and getting some autographs and photos with the members of Stars.
I was also wondering if my friend (shameless plug) who is in Boston had a chance to meet up with Stars when they were performing there. Hmmmm… I wish I could know about it.
Oh! I still love my new Roots hat. Gotta love that Castro/Che, Freedom hat. :)

To finish off this entry, here is a clip from the concert via YouTube. I apologize for the shakiness of the camera.
The Night Starts Here

They are 4 other songs I also put up but I just decided to put it in a playlist, here is the link, http://ca.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=4BB54837CC28910B
