The Birthday Edition: Interviews with Young Rival and The Elwins – S08E27.5

with The Elwins

Hey friends, this is Candice writing a quick recap of today’s edition of WildWorks.

So busy, busy show today – not only did we have a double dose of interviews with bands Young Rival and The Elwins, but today was also Lenny’s birthday! Happy birthday, friend! Here’s to another amazing year ahead and all the DAVIDsTEA your heart desires. : )
The photo shown is Lenny with The Elwins, after the interview.

On today’s show, we played a few tracks from artists and bands that are competing in CBC Music’s Searchlight contest. CBC is looking for Canada’s next big thing, and the winning artist/band will get a sweet $20,000 in music-related equipment from Yamaha. The list of the top 20 acts is slated to be released Feb. 25.

Young Rival – Trying to Make It In the Land of Indie Rock – S08/E27

Young Rival at The Black Sheep Inn-9

Young Rival, which opened Friday night at The Black Sheep Inn for Plants and Animals, spoke to WildWorks just before their live show. The Hamilton, Ont. trio of frontman Aron D’Alesio, bassist John Smith and drummer Noah Fralick chatted with us, beers in hand, just before taking the stage.

Jangly guitars, classic rock nostalgia and all the bright tones of the impetuosity of youth – it seems like those would be the makings of a credible indie rock act. And all the more so in Canada, a fabled hotbed of the indie and alternative rock genre.

Young Rival brings all this to the table and more – and they have done, for roughly 10 years, first as The Ride Theory and now under the moniker Young Rival.

They give a kicking live show, they’ve been on the Canadian indie scene for about 10 years, and their video for the track “Two Reasons” just made the shortlist for the Prism Prize, a $5,000 music video award for Canadian artists with the clout of Drake, Grimes and Arcade Fire.

And after dropping their album, “Stay Young,” in October 2012, and finishing the Quebec leg of their tour this month, you’d think the band would be getting a little more recognition for their efforts. So what’s the problem?

“I wish we knew,” said Smith with a sheepish laugh. “If you have any ideas, you can share them with us.”

Delays Due To Being Sick and Malfunctions – S05.2E04

Sorry for not posting a new entry for this week because I got sick with the cold and sore throat as I didn’t have the energy to write. The second reason is that I don’t have the April 14th edition of the radio show because of a software issue at the station I do have the show but it’s on a different audio format.
I also debuted a new addition to the show, I got a top 5 countdown called The Wild 5 or W5 Countdown. Here’s the debut list.
W5 Countdown – April 14, 2010
5. Red Door – Tall Trees
4. Kettering – The Antlers
3. Fake It – Plants & Animals
2. Fixed – Stars
1. Odessa – Caribou

The playlist from the radio show is at this link.
Here are the interviews that were aired on the April 14th radio show. Even though the interviews were recorded back in February, it was considered unique timing because Young Rival’s full length album was released and Bahamas returned to Ottawa for a concert with Zeus and Jason Collett.

Young Rival with The Balconies and The Bicycles on Thursday – S04E04

I can’t believe I did not create a good title for this entry. I want to write that I went to the Young Rival with The Balconies (of Ottawa) and The Bicycles on Thursday night at Zaphod Beeblebrox. I gotta say that all three bands were great. The Balconies had full of energy to start off as the opening act. Plus, it was also Jacquie Neville’s (the lead singer and guitarist) birthday. The Bicycles had a musical style simliar to The Beach Boys or The Monkeys which had a fun Pop feel. Even though they had a short set due to time, it was still enjoyable. Last but not least, Young Rival were totally rocking the house at Zaphod’s. It’s another week where another band still rememebring me from the previous gig. It was my second time to see Young Rival while it was the first time my bro got to see them live. Here’s the photo from above with all of the members of Young Rival. Also in that photo, you will see me with new glasses and no more browning from my glasses as I don’t have Transitions. I know it’s a very minor detail.
Unfortunately, I did not take any photos for the concert on Thursday night.

Oh yeah, a funny story before going to Zaphod’s, I was at Chapters and I somehow saw Liberal MP and former Ontario Premier (NDP), Bob Rae. There wasn’t a mob mentality or anyone approaching him thanking him for being elected.

What are my plans for this weekend? I don’t have a clue whatsoever. I got this exam testing for Saturday all day. I hope I can pass it.
Seeya!
