From The WildWorks Top 50 of 2013, It’s The Top 10! – S09E17 (Part 2)

WildWorks Vinyl December 30 v3

I had to split the entries this week because of the tribute to Anita Mui running on the same day. On this edition of WildWorks, it was the top 10 Canadian indie music of 2013. It’s considered the third part to The WildWorks Top 50 of 2013. 2013 had some good releases from Canadian musicians and bands. Myself and Lauren counted down to the 50 albums and EPs that came out this year. The number one for this year is Basia Bulat because Tall Tall Shadow (her third record) is considered a strong album and some of the songs showed some emotions as it dealt with loss.
Rounding out the top 10 are Shad, Arcade Fire, The Darcys, Born Ruffians, Young Galaxy, Austra, DIANA, Louise Burns and Gold & Youth.
The full list will be posted up on New Year’s Day.

Before airing the top 10, there was a pre-show as I played the best of 2013 where I forgot to add bands and musicians left out of my top 50 of 2013.
You can check the playlist over at this link. You can listen to the audio below.

Summer Special 2013: The Social Media Summer Series #2

Lenny and Jenna Instax

This week’s guest for the Social Media Summer Series, it was an opportunity to bring in Jenna Tenn-Yuk. All I have to say that she’s multi-talented with the poetry and music that she showcases. The topics discussed were blogging, some social media and what’s great about Ottawa.
Another part that was delved on today’s show as Tenn-Yuk wrote on her blog in 2012 about coming out of the closet. The topic on LGBT was brought up and I was being careful in asking the right questions.
Briefly mentioned during the music break was on the late singer, Leslie Cheung as I thought she might know Chinese music (known as Cantopop).

Songs played this week were new music from Shad, Basia Bulat, The Balconies and The Naked And Famous. It’s exciting to hear new releases from bands and artists as we anticipate their new record.
The playlist can checked at this link. You can listen to the audio below.

As usual, I was joined by Katarina, host of The Cloud on CKCU-FM. All in all, what a great way to end July. I totally apologize if I didn’t introduce her name on the air.
Lastly, I’m enjoying taking photos from the Fujifilm Instax. As the photo posted above was taken on the Instax. I may not be a trendsetter but I’m just having fun shooting photos from digital and analog.

Programming note, The Wild 10 Countdown will be on a Summer break and will try to post the July 24th edition as soon as possible.
Have a great long weekend as we get into August.

Update: Here are links as Tenn-Yuk was in the news about LBGT.

Eight Years On Without Leslie Cheung – S06E30

It’s this time again for another tribute entry and it’s before April 1st. It’s been 8 years since Leslie Cheung has left its fans and admirers. It’s always been an opportunity to blog about him and even play his music on the radio. The things I left out on the radio show were the accolades of awards he’s won from his music and from the movies and how much of an impact he’s had in Hong Kong.

Aside from the tribute, I played the some of the winners of the Juno Awards. Arcade Fire is definitely on a roll for 2011 as it’s won awards from the Grammys, Brit Awards and Canada’s own Juno Awards for their album, The Suburbs. As it seemed like Drake was snubbed, the big surprise would have to be London Ontario’s Shad as he won a Juno Award for Best rap recording. Shad is another artist on a roll since last year when he released TSOL. All I can say is congrats to both of them.
Without further ado, there’s two options to listen to my radio show, there’s the entire show and there’s one for the Leslie Cheung tribute.

The music playlist via CKCU-FM’s website is at this link. The Wild 10 Countdown entry is at this link.

The Kick-Off To 2011 With a Double Top Ten Countdown – S06E18

Happy New Year!
To start off 2011 on my radio show, I did two top 10 countdowns. One was finishing up my own year end countdown and the other was the return of the Wild 10 Countdown. Due to time limitations from the December 29, 2010 show where I played 40 out of the 50 songs from my year end countdown. As for who’s number one for the Top 50 of 2010, it’s a no-brainer that Montreal’s Arcade Fire tops on my year ender because I have been playing The Suburbs a lot on CKCU-FM. As for the return of the Wild 10 Countdown to begin 2011, it’s also Arcade Fire as I heard Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) on various radio shows because the hosts said that it’s their favourite song from The Suburbs.
Also on the show was a new co-host as it’s her first time to be on the radio. Another guest on the show was none other than DJ Digs, who does his show on early Thursday morning.
There was a voice cameo appearance the two hosts of The New Midnight Jamz on Saturday nights on CKCU-FM. They were there to introduce the number four song from the Top 50 of 2010. It was none other than Shad with Rose Garden (YouTube link).
I have been playing Beach House lately as radio shows have made it one of their picks of 2010. I got to give credit to my former co-host, Marzia for getting me into the Baltimore band. The worse part is not leaving a dry eye because their songs from their third album, Teen Dream are so dreamy and very emotional.
If you are wondering what was played on the show, check out the playlist by clicking here.
For the first part of the year end countdown, the playlist is at this link.
I posted the full top 50 of 2010 at this link.

The Winter Gloves & Megan Bonnell Interviews – S06E04

I’ve overcome the cupcake craziness from Sunday. This week’s radio show had two interviews, one was the Winter Gloves of Montreal and the other with Megan Bonnell of Toronto.
The interview with Bonnell was done a few weeks back and it was more unexpected because I didn’t prepare but the interview went pretty well.
The Winter Gloves interview went well but I did not get a chance to see them live as I had to attend an event called GenYOtt. I was meeting up with various Twitter users in Ottawa.
The summary of the top 10 countdown is on the other page.
Being a supporter of Shad’s music, I was thrilled that there was a remix version of Rose Garden. It’s available at this link. Even though Summer is done, I am still hooked on the song.
In the 2nd hour of the show, I played the local acts who will be playing at Pop Montreal. I did a giveaway and then I had a few guests on the show. It will be a nice experiment to have a discussion type segment for final half-hour of the show.
This weekend, I am off to Pop Montreal and hoping to check out some live music and do some audio interviews.
You can check the playlist at this link.

Without further ado, you can listen to the full radio show by pressing play.

Flying Over To Polaris Again – S06E01 (Season Premiere)

Congratulations to Karkwa for winning the 2010 Polaris Music Prize.

Finally! The blog is back for a sixth season and an apology due to a slight delay on the return. The Summer of 2010 was pretty interesting due to the hot weather but I enjoyed doing the so-called “summer specials” where I did some interviews at music festivals.
I have decided to begin the new season on the upcoming Polaris Music Prize. Friday night at Canteen Art Shop + Gallery held a Polaris Music Prize poster show. The 10 nominated short listed albums shown in an elegant poster art. I was told that the Broken Social Scene poster (image below) has been a hot seller. Mind you, those posters don’t come cheap. The photos on top are Radio Radio and The Sadies. The rest from under are Owen Pallett, Karkwa, Caribou, Broken Social Scene, The Besnard Lakes, Tegan & Sara, Dan Mangan & Shad.
There was a raffle draw for 2 tickets to go to Toronto (transportation and accomodation excluded) for The Polaris Music Prize Gala. Was hoping to win it but it’s unlikely to go to Toronto on such short notice.
In a way, Canadian indie music fans and myself cannot wait to find out who will win the 2010 Polaris Music Prize and the $20,000. I am totally rooting for either Dan Mangan or Shad to win it.
Enjoy viewing the photos that I shot on the new iPod touch (4th generation). Apologies on the image quality coming from it.

Aside from the poster show, there were other things happening that almost made myself go crazy. Prior to attending the poster show, I had to go to Raw Sugar Cafe to do an audio interview with Kat Burns of Forest City Lovers. I should expect the airdate for the interview to be airing for this coming Wednesday (Sept. 22nd) on CKCU-FM.
Afterwards, I decided to make a short stop to Darcy McGees for Oyster Friday. If you don’t know Oyster Friday, it is basically a Twitter get together for beers and free complimentary oysters. In case any of the tweeps read this, it’s my shoutout to you. You people are awesome!
The Canteen one’s already explained as after the checking out the poster show, I dropped by to Cafe Nostalgica to interview a Toronto singer, Megan Bonnell. I missed out on her performance due to going back to Raw Sugar Cafe to see Forest City Lovers perform. All I can say about Bonnell is that she’s lovely, nice and pretty easy-going. It was also the first time to conduct the interview without preparing questions. The airdate will be announced. She’s sure going to be an great singer.

To end off, Friday, September 17, 2010 was considered a hectic time due to walking all over downtown Ottawa and breaking a sweat. It’s all on fun time.
Here’s a videoclip of the posters.

2010 Summer Special

It’s this time of year where I sporadically post entries during the Summer. I had the opportunity to go for more Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest dates compared to last year. I was able to do audio interviews with several artists. It will be provided here. Overall, I was excited to see some of the performing acts. Worse part was enduring the heat.

The Ottawa Folk Festival Edition (Posted on August 18, 2010)

You can listen to the August 18th edition of the radio show. Aside from the top 10 countdown and Arcade Fire songs, there were interviews from Rolf Klausener of The Acorn, Aidan Knight, Jill Zmud, & Jim Bryson.
Press play to listen.

Apparently, I am taking part in this blog rally challenge, check the blog link out by clicking here. If you like my entry on Ottawa Bluesfest or the radio show, just comment away. Finished on July 26th.

Don’t forget to check out http://wild5countdownckcu.wordpress.com/ as it will be the only blog to be updated weekly during the Summer. I have been mentioning Arcade Fire over on the other blog.
