The Final Weekend of May 2017 – S12E13

The last weekend of May in Ottawa had a lot of events happening. To start off Friday night, I went to Kinki Lounge Kitchen for Kool Krys‘s album release party. Her fourth album, Feminum was released on Friday and it’s a tribute female empowerment and her favourite super-hero, Wonder Woman.

The Feminum album release party had Ghettosocks open up the event. It was a great event and the funny moment was having to sing along to Perfect Day when Ghettosocks began his set.

You can listen to Feminum over at Bandcamp which is free to download.

On Saturday
For Saturday, there were various events happening, the first place was checking out the annual Great Glebe Garage Sale. Just walked to see the crowds look and rummaging for deals and unique objects around the area. I have been using the iPhone 7 Plus and tried to experiment shooting on portrait mode. You will see one of the photos shot using the depth effect.

After the garage sale, I took a long walk over to the Festival Plaza at Ottawa City Hall for Ottawa Race Weekend’s Celebration Stage. I went to see Scary Bear Soundtrack as I haven’t seen the lead member for awhile. It was a joy to see the members on a warm sunny afternoon.

The band released a new track (actually, a reworked version) to commemorate Asian Heritage Month 2017. It’s called Asian Fetishist, you can listen to the track on Bandcamp.

You check the photos from below from the events I checked out.

Saw Gallery Summer Opening and Party Main

Saw Gallery held their Summer Opening and Party on Thursday night. There was a new exhibit displayed along with live music outdoors. The event was in collaboration with CHUO FM, Ottawa Explosion Weekend, National Campus and Community Radio Conference, and the Embassy of Finland in Ottawa

With the opening and party, there were food served by Friday Lunch Project. It was a healthy menu of sandwiches provided.

The live music consisted of Scary Bear Soundtrack, Crabe and Telecomo. Unfortunately, I only checked out Scary Bear Soundtrack as I’m dealing with a cold.

You can check out the photos below.

Some Others I Left Off From The Best of 2014 Music – S10E14

IMG_0781
I’m not done with 2014 just yet. There were some notable musicians and bands that came out with album in 2014  as well as going through some of the Ottawa bands that released materials last year. My year end countdown is based on albums as singles don’t really count. Here’s my short summary on the leftovers.

I’m going to start with Scary Bear Soundtrack. Gloria Song, who’s from Ottawa and residing up in Nunavut. The band had some member changes over the time and change of location but it had a lot of exposure in 2014.
The band got entered to CBC Music‘s Searchlight contest and has made it to various year end countdowns and picks from radio programs and music blogs.

Here’s this track via SoundCloud, The Longest Night.

Ottawa = Winterfell – S08E28

image
We know, we know – there are enough jokes out there about Snowmageddon and Snowpocalypse and …Winterfell.

But seriously, this snow though…It would give even the Night’s Watch a run for its money.

Still, we did our darnedest to pull together a good show yesterday. This post is a little delayed, since Lenny and I were stuck shovelling our driveways all afternoon, but here it is – our recap of this week’s edition of WildWorks.

Some pretty exciting news to start things off – The RBC Royal Bank Bluesfest lineup was announced yesterday, and we were reaaaal keen when we saw some of our favourites on the list. Big acts include Björk, BB King, the Dixie Chicks, Rush and Wu-Tang Clan. Personally I’m excited to see Passion Pit, Mother Mother, Zeds Dead, Camera Obscura and Bahamas.

Gloria of Scary Bear Soundtrack Taking Over The Show – S08E19

With Gloria - January 2013

OK, I couldn’t think of a good title. On this week’s edition of the show, I had the opportunity to have Gloria from Scary Bear Soundtrack join me on the show because she has been promoting a live show at Babylon Nightclub for Wednesday night (today). It’s also her final live show as she will be moving to Nunavut at the end of January. Even though, it’s her swan song, the band is doing a music video party release before leaving to the Northern confines of the Arctic.
On the radio show, Gloria picked some of her music picks from the likes of Melissa Laveaux and gatesgatesgates while there were brand new music on my end from You Say Party, Leif Vollebekk and The Matinee. January is a bit slow in terms of new music being released. It was another blessing in disguise to have a guest on the show. It was an unexpected surprise to play You Say Party’s new song right away as it was announced on social media and music sites. It’s great to hear about the band reuniting after their tough time back in 2010.
Also mentioned during the live show was talking PSY’s Gangnam Style. Overall, a good mix of new wave, rock and folk music all in one for this week’s show.
The first half of the show for this blog is the Wild 10 Countdown. For the second week on the top spot, Pick Me Up by Hollerado is still number one.
The top 10 countdown for January 16th is over at this link.
After the countdown, I discussed about Arts & Crafts celebrating their 10th anniversary and Broken Social Scene reuniting for one night only. What I forgot to do was mention Broken Social Scene in the playlist set. It’s after Caught a Long Wind by Feist. I blame my co-host for no-showing.
The playlist for the radio show is over at this link.
Finally got New Myspace and my profile is over at this link. Hopefully the new version has a good following and not fizzle out.
All I can say to Gloria, enjoy your time in Nunavut, your presence in Ottawa will be missed but two years can go by quickly.
