I had a great time going to some events on December 16, 2011. To begin, I found out through Twitter that Arcade Fire released a music video to a favourite song that everyone loves from The Suburbs, it was Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains). I couldn’t stop watching and listening to the song.
The next exciting part was attending CBC All In A Day for Share Central at Ben Franklin Place. Performing there were Kool Krys and Natalia & Montuno. It was nice to see Kool Krys as I gave her the wonderful Kanpe Tea for DAVIDsTEA. In return, she gave me her second album, Listen To Your Art. Overall, I had a good time there and had a Beavertail.
Last but not least, I headed over to Raw Sugar Cafe to see Joey Wright and Rolf Klausener (of The Acorn) for a show. It was a good show filled with funny humour and not so keen language.

Oh yeah, since I didn’t post an entry for Wednesday, the radio show from Wednesday will be posted. I played part 1 of my Top 50 of 2011. The playlist is over at this link via CKCU-FM.
The December 14th Radio Show – Press play to listen.
I cannot believe February went by quickly and I know I did not mention about my birthday on the blog as I forgot about it. We’re already onto March and there’s several events coming up in terms of concerts and various activities in Ottawa.
I’ve recovered from the cold, fever and sore throat as it seems like people have been sick during the final week of February.
The photo shown on top was the Great Bloomers show which happened last Friday at Cafe Dekcuf. I had the opportunity to chat with the frontman of the band. The interview aired on the March 2nd radio show. Luckily, the co-hosts returned to the show after being absent for 2 weeks.
I’m enjoying the Blue Microphones Yeti as the voiceover for Wild 10 Countdown was recorded on the mic. Hope you will like the minor change in quality.
During the live part of the show, there were new tracks by Snailhouse and Kool Krys as they just released new songs and both are excellent! Both of them have ties to Ottawa. Finally played Montreal’s Domestic Crisis Group after the silliness in February from Chinese New Year to Chinese love songs and the change in a shortened program.
The playlist for the radio show is at this link.

2011 Music Favourites So Far
I should keep track on what albums or singles that have caught my attention for remembering come year-end reviews and picks. I was late in the game in 2010 with the positive response to Beach House’s Teen Dream.
Here’s what caught my attention so far;
The Naked & Famous – songs are Punching In A Dream and Young Blood. The album, Passive Me, Aggressive You has not been released in North America yet. The album is considered a 2010 release in their homeland of New Zealand. It’s still new for North American listeners.
Lykke Li – Wounded Rhymes is the first time I picked up her album. I did not listen much from her first album. So far, I Follow Rivers has been my favourite track.
British Sea Power – Their album, Valhalla Dancehall has caught my interest. Their sound ranges from the likes of Arcade Fire to Kings of Leon. So far, they’re getting good buzz.
Tennis! – With the release of Marathon, their sounds bring up a 50s Pop feel and so far, the co-hosts have been enjoying them.

Interview – Great Bloomers
Thursday night was pretty exciting as I went to Zaphod Beeblebrox for the 3rd week as I checked out Girl Party featuring Jas Nasty, Kool Krys and Jenocide. I decided to do an audio interview with Kool Krys because she’s been heard on other radio shows lately. There’s something unique about her music because Ottawa hasn’t really got a big hip-hop presence (my opinion, I don’t check out the 613 hip-hop scene very much). It seems like she’s my first “official” Ottawa artist to be interviewed for my radio show. The Balconies don’t really count because it was more of a Christmas theme when I interviewed them.
The show was great because Kool Krys brought excitement to her hip-hop music. She sang some classic tunes like Salt ‘N’ Pepa and Destiny’s Child as it reminded me of my teenage years when I listened to those songs on the radio. She brought the old school mentality and it certainly gave me a smile because I felt like it was the 1990s all over again.
Prior to Kool Krys performing, Jas Nasty was spinning tunes and she also played old school tunes from the 80s. The final act was Jenocide, from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her music was more on the electronic and thrash (as her MySpace page says it). I didn’t realize her style of music reminded me of Ruby Jean and The Thoughtful Bees, also from Halifax.
Overall, it was a good night even though I missed out on other events happening.
From cartoons to comic book heroes, we will go from Jem & The Holograms to Wonder Woman.
Played the Superfriends theme on the March 24th radio show because of Wonder Woman being in the cartoon. The Superfriends theme is played around the 17 minute mark.
Here’s the radio show and interview with Kool Krys in 2 parts. Playlists for hour 1 and hour 2 are available if you want to check what was played.
Radio show – Press play to listen. You can now listen to the show through iTunes as an audio stream.

This is not the end of Series 5 yet, as I didn’t expect to go over with the number of entries. Series 5 will continue with a new number, 5.2.
5.2 will possibly start with the Said The Whale/In-Flight Safety/Graham Wright concert or a yearly tribute to Leslie Cheung and the first time to dedicate it on radio after writing up for a couple of years since his death.
Other Loose Ends Before Ending 5.1
I did some video shooting for Bands Undone. I shot for Ottawa bands, Dave Norris & Local Ivan and Old Crowns on separate days. What made me excited was that the Canon EOS 5D Mark II got a new firmware update and I shot on 24p (24 frames per second, which they say is cinema look). A new method I tried was using the microphone and monopod as a boom mic. Instead of having Kara using a microphone, it was nice to have her not use a mic and have her chat freely. The one with Dave Norris was shaky because it was a first time but the one with Old Crowns turned out well.
Check the links provided from the Bands Undone site as it will include the videos I shot, Dave Norris & Local Ivan and Old Crowns. Both local bands were great and enjoyable.
